It’s been more than fifty years since President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Community Mental Health Act of 1963. That act strived to  revitalize  mental health care for people  with serious mental illness (SMI). It endeavored  to allow people  with SMI to live among society by stabilizing them with new evidence-based treatments and medications, and to rid society of  the inhumane conditions that characterized  institutions.
